The workshop “Insects’s Biodiversity and Conservation” for training ICNF – Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas staff will be held from 21 to 23 October at CISE - Centro de Interpretação da Serra da Estrela in Seia. The International Conference on "sex determination and differentiation in fishes - genes, environment and behaviour" will take place September 23th–24th, 2014 at Fundação da Faculdade de Ciências, Lisboa.
This conference aims to promote knowledge exchange and debate on the latest findings regarding processes of sex differentiation and mechanisms of primary sex determination in fishes. Genetic/epigenetic, environmental and behavioural factors will be discussed as well as the diversity of evolutionary scenarios described in fishes. Find more information here.

National Agreement for the Conservation of Iberian Lynx open to society - CBA, as member of the executive committee of the “Action Plan for the Conservation of Iberian Lynx”, was one of the twelve institutions that subscribed the new agreement approved at 1st of July in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy. For the first time, besides institutions, citizens are also invited to subscribe the new national agreement: more information and how to subscribe here.

The researcher Catarina Mateus was recently awarded with an honorable mention under the Eighth Award for Research in Limnology of the Iberian Association of Limnology. This award distinguished Spanish and Portuguese authors who completed their PhD theses in the field of Limnology during 2012 and 2013. The PhD thesis of Catarina Mateus, entitled "Genetic and morphological diversity of the genus Lampetra (Petromyzontidae) in Europe", was developed in collaboration between the Centro de Oceanografia (FCUL) and the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência/ Centro de Biologia Ambiental (MUHNAC/CBA-FCUL), under the supervision of Prof. Pedro Raposo de Almeida and Dr. Maria Judite Alves. The PhD degree was obtained at the University of Évora in December 2013.

SESSÃO COMEMORATIVA DOS 2O ANOS DO CBA

No âmbito das I JORNADAS CE3C a decorrer nos dias 5 a 7 de Junho na FCUL, será promovida no dia 6 de Junho às 16:30 uma Sessão Comemorativa dos “20 Anos do Centro de Biologia Ambiental (CBA) - Uma equipa com projectos e futuro (Ce3C)”. Nesta sessão pública que decorrerá no anfiteatro principal (Edificio C3 - 3.2.14) participarão, igualmente, os coordenadores das unidades que integrarão, com o CBA, o futuro centro de investigação Ce3C  – ver Programa. No final da sessão haverá um Jantar-Convívio, aberto a todos os membros e personalidades convidadas (inscrições até dia 3 de Junho, em cdambiental@fc.ul.pt).

 

Gabriel Martins, CBA collaborator, won first prize of Nikon Small World in Motion. This 3D reconstruction of a quail embryo – comprised of more than 1,000 separate images – shows in startling clarity and detail the anatomy of the specimen. The winning video shows a sequence of “virtual” slices through the whole embryo with 10 days of (in egg) gestation.

A study was published in Nature in April that contrasted bat biodiversity with predictions by two different biogeographic theories. The study, which was conducted by an international group of researchers, including Christoph F. J. Meyer of the CBA, concluded that a theory of countryside biogeography is essential to develop efficient conservation strategies in agricultural ecosystems. The latter already represent roughly half of the global land surface and this area is expected to increase further. The recent study entitled "Laboratory selection quickly erases historical differentiation" conducted by CBA members Inês Fragata, Pedro Simões and Prof. Margarida Matos was published in PLOS ONE. More details can be found here (PR) and in the news here.

The genetic basis of Drosophila cross-resistance to viruses was elucidated by an international team of researchers that includes Sara Magalhães, a researcher from CBA. The study was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in April. More details here (PR) and here.

The exhibition Insectos em Ordem has opened on the 3rd of February, at Palácio do Correio Velho in Castelo Branco and stays utill the 4th April in the city. This exhibition is a production of MUHNAC, CBA e Tagis. Its itinerancy is promoted by the program O MUNDO NA ESCOLA, that will take the insects to 10 cities in Portugal. A newly published study appeared in the online journal PLoS ONE, on the clymene dolphin, a small and sleek marine mammal living in the Atlantic Ocean, which showed that this species arose through natural hybridization between two closely related dolphins species, a process that is common for plants, fishes, and birds, but quite rare in mammals, according to authors from the American Museum of Natural History’s Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics, the University of Lisbon, the Wildlife Conservation Society and other contributing groups. The project for the renewal of the Lisbon Botanic Garden, with a budget of 500 thousand euros, was the great winner of the City Participatory Budget, with 7553 votes from a total of 35.922 thousand votes. It was an outstanding victory which shows the growing concerns of the citizens on green and public spaces.

Lisbon Botanic Garden wants to recover the pathways, the  water circulation systems, to create a Mediterranean garden, to create recreation areas for the public, grass areas for public use and the reopening of the lower gate connecting it to the Liberty Avenue, in Lisbon downtown.

CBA is organizing a new set of Advanced Courses to be held during 2014! These Courses are of high interest in the formation of students enrolling in the first year of the Doctoral Programmes in Biology (UL), Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (UL and UP) and Biology and Ecology of Global Changes, for whom they are free. The Courses can also be attended by post-graduate students of other Doctoral Programmes or master students in Biology and related areas, and others with basic adequate formation. Read more here.

The Python 101 course in the University of Lisbon, was a success!
Once again, the course is aimed at researchers who do not have programming experience, but recognize the importance of this skill and are highly motivated to learn a new way to approach their scientific questions.
The course will cover subjects ranging from basic variable handling to using external modules. For more information and to register for the course, please head to here.

The 4th PhD Students Annual Meeting occured last December 18th and 19th, at TecLabs, at FCUL.

Last 30th of November occured the Seminar: "Active Learning on Science Teaching: What Advantages?" The seminar was a success gathering teachers, associations, parents, educational institutions and science and educational researchers. The presentations and posters were a valuable tool for the participants and the discussions and results were outstanding! For more information on the program see:

CBA participated on the Science and Technology Week 2013 where several activities occured. This year the Science and Technology Week took also place on the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. See the detailed program here.

Neves-Corvo, Baixo Alentejo. The most active mining region in Portugal, where one of the biggest copper mines of Europe can be found. However, the richness of this territory doesn't end underground. On the surface biodiversity flourishes among the cereal steppe areas and the holm oak Montado.
A journey by the rhythms of the seasons and through the different habitats that make up this region. A travel showing some of its most characteristic plants and animals and how they’ve adapted to this extreme environment. A relation between Man and Nature and how it was shaped throughout the centuries in a story of complicity told in the first person.

Dra. Cecília Sérgio, researcher from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, recently received the Grolle Award 2013 for the excellency of her work on Bryophytes. She was awarded by The International Association of Bryologists, in a cerimony that took place on the Natural History Museum of London. A radio interview with Dra. Professor Eduardo G. Crespo was the first person to receive the recently created “SPBD Award: at the Service of Developmental Biology in Portugal” (”Prémio SPBD: ao Serviço da Biologia do Desenvolvimento em Portugal”). The award ceremony took place on the 25 October, during the 2nd Meeting of the Portuguese Society for Developmental Biology which was held in FCUL. During the ceremony, the Board of the SPBD, represented by its President, António Jacinto, emphasized that Prof. Crespo has had a decisive role in the teaching of Developmental Biology and related disciplines to undergraduate students. With his excellence in teaching for the past two decades and ability to motivate the students of the FCUL Biology course, he has stimulated many young biologists to embark on a career in Developmental Biology and related areas, and to face this career choice with great enthusiasm.

The Portuguese Society for Developmental Biology (SPBD) organized its 2nd Meeting jointly with the Spanish Society for Developmental Biology (SEBD) and in association with the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapy (SPCE-TC) in FCUL on 24-26 October 2013. The meeting had 125 participants who contributed to the meeting with two keynote addresses, 12 talks by invited speakers, 24 short talks and 63 posters. The meeting was organized by CBA members Sólveig Thorsteinsdóttir, Gabriela Rodrigues and Pedro Rifes, Élio Sucena from DBA/FCUL and IGC, and IMM members Leonor Saúde and Cláudia Gaspar. The October issue of National Geographic PT features an article about the project “Temporal dynamics of the impacts of forest fragmentation on Neotropical bat assemblages” currently taking place at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project in the Central Brazilian Amazon. The project is led by Christoph Meyer (CBA-ADC) and involves the CBA-ADC members Jorge Palmeirim, Ricardo Rocha, Adrià López-Baucells, Fábio Farneda and Inês Silva. The 9th edition of Noite Europeia dos Investigadores, took place on 27th September 2013. CBA was invited to be present in the event organized by MUHNAC, and some of its members were present organizing activities, talks, etc. This event was a success, counting with more than 600 visitors in MUHNAC. The  Conservation Leaders Advisory Team WORKSHOP, will be held on the 7th October, in Anfiteatro da Fundação da FCUL, 9:30-16h. This workshop entitled “Exploring threats to recreational and sport fishing across Europe” aims to discuss openly conflicts between recreational fisheries and EU policy and other legislative frameworks and explore how to best resolve such conflicts. The XIV Congress of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology, having as main organiser Octavio Paulo from CBA, was held in August at FCUL, Lisbon. The Congress was a success, joining for a week more than 1500 researchers from all around the world. More information can be found here.

On the 3rd of June, Prof. Dr. Bernard Wood will give the talk "The Origin of Homo: What are we looking for?" at FCUL, room 2.2.21, 12h. This talk will consider the problems of identifying the origins of any genus and the particular challenges involved in identifying the origins of the genus Homo. CBA members of the Animal Diversity and Conservation research group (Nuno M. Pedroso and Luís M. Rosalino) are two of the editors of a new book entitled "Um Olhar Sobre os Carnívoros Portugueses", in which Margarida Santos-Reis (CBA Coordinator) wrote the Preface. This book describes the mammal carnivore species inhabiting Portugal and their natural history. The launching ceremony will take place at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa on 14th February 2013 - 18h (C1 building - Auditório da FFCUL).

CBA is very pleased to announce an open session with two conferences that will be held on the 17th January from 11:00 to 13:00 at FCUL (C1, room Anfiteatro FFCUL). Invited speakers will be, respectively,  Prof. Paul Skelton from South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (Grahamstown, South Africa) and Prof. Ian Cowx from Hull International Fisheries Institute (Hull, UK) (see program here). Given the speakers' unquestionable prestige, this session is highly recommended for those who work on fish taxonomy, inland fisheries and conservation, among other related issues.

Luís Miguel Rosalino (CBA - ADC) is one of the editors of the new book "New trends towards Mediterranean tourism sustainability". In Memoriam:
Maria José L. Boavida who died on the 30th of August, 2012, aged 64.

Maria José, or Zé as she preferred to be called, was a full member of Center for Environmental Biology since the unit foundation almost two decades ago. She was a highly enthusiastic and generous colleague, well known for her strong commitment with science and teaching, in particular the topics within the research field she embraced – limnology.
Zé was the national representative of Portugal for the SIL (International Society of Limnology). The society newsletter (SILnews 61, December 2012) has just published a text in Zé memoriam that can be seen here.

In the 5th edition of the BES Biodiversity Award the project "Guide of freshwater fish in Portugal: knowing the biodiversity in order to preserve it" coordinated by Maria João Collares-Pereira (EG/ACB), received a Honorable Mention by the jury of the award.
The team comprised by members of CBA, FishGul, Biota and scientific illustrators, intends to develop the first field guide, that gather all the relevant information about the freshwater fish in Portugal. The aim is to obtain a didactic and scientific tool that can be used by different users and call attention to these species and their conservation. Learn more here and here (PT).

CBA-ESFE in colaboration with Sociedade Portuguesa de Botânica (SPBotânica) will participate in the Portuguese activities of the 1st Fascination of Plant Day to be hold on May 18. This event is coordinated by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO) and aims to promote the fascination and the importance of plants, all around the world.

The Congress of the Portuguese Society of Ethology - SPE2012: 9th National Congress of Ethology was held on 12th-13th of April 2012 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) will be organized by the Centre of Environmental Biology (CBA). The National Congress of Ethology fulfils the role of gathering and updating the growing research in animal behaviour done in Portugal, and of promoting a productive interaction between researchers and students. This meeting intends to gather contributions from the different fields in this area, Physiology, Ecology, Evolution, Psychology and Neurosciences, and to present an integrative perspective of Animal Behaviour. Cristina Máguas (CBA-ESFE) in collaboration with researchers of Bielefeld University used nitrogen isotopes in an innovative approach to reveal otherwise invisible interactions between invasive and native plants in a coastal dune system of the Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot. Invasive exotic species cause large ecological and economic problems worldwide. The method developed opens new venues in conservation because it provides an early diagnostic tool for ecological management, improving restoration success rates following exotic species eradication programs. This conference will focus on Zooarqueologia and the cientific research developed over the past years within this area. The conference is organized by CBA, Uniarq and NAP. Faculty of 1000 is a website for researchers that provides ratings of and commentary on scientific research papers. CBA was on the television program BIOSFERA (RTP2), with the participation of PDC and ESFE group members.
Cecília Sérgio (PDC) was interview about the Project "Cryptosensores" that studies the use of Bioindicators applied to air quality. Also several members of ESFE (Otília Correia, Cristina Branquinho, Pedro Pinho, Paula Matos, Alice Nunes e Cristina Antunes) were interviewed about the different research projects developed by the group, about the use of Bioindicators and about the Desertification in Portugal. FLORA-ON is a new website that provides interactive tools to easily access a database of the Portuguese Flora (photographs, geographic data and morphological data), developed by Sociedade Portuguesa de Botânica (SPBotânica). Miguel Porto (ESFE), president of SPBotânica is also a CBA member, as well as other participants of this project. The launch of FLORA-ON will take place at MNHNC on February 25. In sequence of the successful initiative in 2010/ 2011, the executive committee is organizing again in 2011/ 2012 two CBA Seminars, I (1st semester) and II (2nd semester). These seminars are thought mainly for students enrolling in their first PhD year of the Doctoral programmes in Biology (FCUL) or Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution, corresponding to 6 ECTS in each semester. They can thus be a part of the 1st year curriculum of their PhD programmes.
The seminars are also of high interest to other post-graduate students (e.g doing master studies in a Biology area, or at a more advanced year in the PhD programme, or BTI and BI researchers). The seminars are free. Please see the program and more informations here.

The aim of this initiative was to reward a students class for their participation in the project Eco-Escolas 2011, and was supported by Câmara Municipal de Grândola - Divisão de Ambiente. CBA is organizing a new set of advanced courses to be held during 2012. These Courses are of high interest in the formation of students enrolling in the first year of the Doctoral Programmes in Biology (UL), Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (UL and UP) and Biology and Ecology of Global Changes, for whom they are free. The Courses can also be attended by post-graduate students of other Doctoral Programmes or master students in Biology and related areas, and others with basic adequate formation. Read more here.

The European Red List of Vascular Plants was launched, in wich Joana Brehm (Pos-Doc CBA) and Miguel Porto (PhD CBA-ESFE) were involved. In this publication, were assessed 1,826 European vascular plant species, which compares to around 8% of Europe’s flora. A total of 467 species are threatened with extinction. Were assessed the following three groups:
- Plants listed under European or global policy instruments such as the Habitats Directive, Bern Convention, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the EU Wildlife Trade Regulation;
- Crop wild relatives (CWR) of priority crops;
- Aquatic plant species. Read it here

CoBiG², a research group at CBA is participating in the Assemblathon 2, along with other 19 groups from Canada, China, France, Italy, Russia, UK, and USA. The Assemblathon is a set of periodic collaborative efforts that all help improve methods of genome assembly. Read more here.

Several members of the CBA are involved in the Application of Arrábida to the World Heritage given by UNESCO. On the 10th of October they presented the work developed under this application, in a meeting of the Monitoring Committee at the Cine-teatro São João, in Palmela. This application is leaded by Association of Municipalities of Setúbal Region (AMRS) and should be formalized in 2011. The Application to World Heritage is a comprehensive one since it integrates the criteria of a natural and cultural heritage. Different institutions are involved from ICBN to universities and technical teams. The CBA team contributes in different areas of expertise related with vegetation, habitats, flora and fauna in the Arrábida region. It is a privilege to CBA to be involved in such an important event as this application contributes to regional and national level. See more here and here.

The inauguration of the Herdade da Ribeira Abaixo (HRA) Biodiversity Station was held on October 8. This event was included on the initiative "11 Caminhos + 1 Percursos na Biodiversidade" that opened twelve stations, almost all located in Natura 2000 sites. The aim of this stations is to involve public in the observation and monitoring of local biodiversity. The inauguration  of HRA Biodiversity station was attended by about 60 participants, including the participation of the Deputy Secretary of State for Forestry and the Councillor for the Environment of Grândola municipality that funded the informative pannels located along the trail.

The launch of the LTER-Portugal Network took place on July 15 at FLAD. The implementation of LTER-Portugal was led by SPECO, through its Vice-President and National Representative of the International Network (ILTER), Prof. Margarida Santos-Reis (also CBA Scientific Coordinator). The LTER-Portugal is an environmental monitoring network that integrates an international network of sites where you practice long-term ecological research to better understand the structure and functioning of ecosystems.
The main objectives of the LTER Network are: 1)monitor and store time series data in ecology; 2)establish contacts between institutions and researchers working on ecology studies; 3)promote the exchange of data and knowledge; 4)support the decision-making processes.
CBA is responsible for one of four sites of this network, designated LTER-Montado and has its 'core-area' in the Field Station of the Faculty of Science from University of Lisbon (Herdade da Ribeira Abaixo). Please see invitation here and read more here.

André Silva (a Master student of the Animal Diversity and Conservation research group at the CBA, supervised by Dr. Luís Miguel Rosalino) is studying the environmental variables and the anthropogenic impacts determining the occurrence of wildcats in Scotland, the last stronghold of the species in Great Britain. The study is part of a larger project by the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit of the University of Oxford aiming to estimate the current population status of the species and the extent of hybridization with the domestic cat. CBA co-organizes the initiative "11 Caminhos + 1 Percursos na Biodiversidade" that will open twelve stations of Biodiversity almost all located in Natura 2000.

A number of CBA members, Maria Amélia Martins-Loução, Cristina Branquinho, Cristina Cruz, Cristina Máguas, Pedro Pinho and Teresa Dias have been participating in several International projects concerning the impact of nitrogen on global changes: NiNe, NitroEurope, Cost Action 729 and the INI (International Nitrogen Initiative), which resulted in the joint publication of several books, reports and papers. This initiative highlighted the leading role of Europe on assessing the effects, control and mitigation of nitrogen impacts on our environment, health and economy.The Portuguese team contributed with several assessments that measured the impact of increasing nitrogen on ecosystems, including the revision of the critical levels of atmospheric ammonia for Mediterranean ecosystems in European legislation.
For science promotion we have also contributed for the development of Nitrogen Footprint.

This book is the third in a book series dedicated to evolution, which started in 2008 with the book "Evolução. História e Argumentos" and was followed by "Evolução. Conceitos e Debates" in 2009. Prof. Maria do Mar Oom (of the Evolutionary Genetics research group at the CBA) and Dr. Cristina Luís (MCUL-MNHN) were part of an international team studying the origin of the European domestic horses.
The team investigated patterns of genetic diversity in 24 Eurasian horse breeds and concluded that, in the Holocene, the Iberian Peninsula and the Caspian Sea region provided refugia for wild horses, and that the genetic contribution of these wild populations to domestic horse breeds across Europe may have been considerable.

Luís Miguel Rosalino (Post-Doc from the Animal Diversity and Conservation research group at the CBA) is one of the editors of the new book "Middle-Sized Carnivores in Agricultural Landscapes" published by Nova Science Publishers. This book deals with mesocarnivores ecological adaptations to man-shaped landscapes and the opportunities and conservation problems associated with these adaptations. It includes case studies (e.g. at a specific level) demonstrating how these predators are taking advantage of a new resources these landscapes can offer, as well as broader approaches focused on conservations problems and carnivores interactions in this agricultural landscapes. In the context of the celebration of the Year of the Bat (2011-2012), Prof. Jorge Palmeirim (ADC) was interviewed by Jornal de Notícias. The article, "Mamíferos amigos", attempts to clarify and improve people's perception of bats. Besides conveying basic information and curiosities on the biology and ecology of bats, emphasis is placed on their multiple positive roles in ecosystems, economic importance (e.g. by controlling insect populations), and on the conservation threats to bat species in Portugal. On March 20, Ana Filipa Filipe (researcher at the CBA), received an Honorable Mention from “Prémio Fluviário – Jovem Cientista do Ano 2010”, for the paper “Native and introduced fish species richness in Mediterranean streams: the role of multiple landscape influences” published in the journal Diversity and Distribution, in collaboration with Maria Filomena Magalhães and Maria João Collares-Pereira. This award intended to distinguish a MsC or PhD student who had published as first author an article related to biodiversity and conservation of inland aquatic resources. Read more here.

Prof. Paulo Fonseca (from the Behavior research group at the CBA) and Prof. Jorge Alves (DEGGE-FCUL) created the 'FishTalk - Underwater Sound Generator', a new technology that allows the reproduction of sounds emitted by fish, with high fidelity and independently of water depth.  This project was developed at the FCUL and had the collaboration of the PhD students Raquel Vasconcelos and  José Miguel Simões.
The 'FishTalk' won the "Business Ideas Competition" of the 2nd edition of the "Idea to Product Portugal 2011", held on the 25th and 26th of February in Oporto. Learn more here and here.

The University of Lisbon is the 1st European University to implement an Evolutionary Studies program - EvoS. At the UL, EvoS is hosted by CBA.
EvoS, is meant to explain Evolution to people from all backgrounds and demonstrate its relevance to understand all living processes, including the humanities. The program was originally created by David Sloan Wilson at the University of Binghamton. Since then, EvoS programs and related initiatives have joined in an International Consortium.
At the UL EvoS is comprised of two courses – EvoS-1 for undergraduate students and EvoS-2 for postgraduate students. Students from any graduate or undergraduate background are welcome. A one-day International Symposium is held annually that students from both courses are required to attend. The symposium is open to others wishing to attend.
EvoS at the UL is being implemented and managed by Filipa Vala, Margarida Matos and David Sloan Wilson.

Prof. Maria Amelia Martins-Loução, Vice-Rector of the University of Lisbon and Researcher at the CBA (BAI/PDC), has been awarded with the Ibero-American Prize of Botany "Celestino Mutis" 2010 - Cortes de Cadiz, for her scientific work on the carob tree.
The prize was given by the city of Cadiz in collaboration with the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy and Real Academia Hispano-Americana de Cadiz.

Raquel Vasconcelos (PhD CBA-BHV), and José Miguel Simões, has won the Business Ideas Competition of the 2nd edition of the Idea to Product Portugal 2011, held on the 25th and 26th of February in Oporto, with the presentation of the project FishTalk - Underwater Sound Generator. This project is a technology that allows the reproduction of sounds emitted by fish underwater, with high fidelity and independently of water depth. Prof. Paulo Fonseca (CBA-BHV) and is also part of the team. Learn more here

The genetic confirmation that the Asiatic cheetah is a distinct subspecies implies that the conservation of its last representatives, approximately 100 individuals that still survive in Iran, should become a top priority.
A new study on the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) questions the conventional wisdom about its genetic status, clarifies the recent evolutionary history of the species and has profound implications on its conservation. The study, carried out by an international team including a researcher at the CBA (Carlos Fernandes) was published this month in the international scientific journal Molecular Ecology and is available here. Advertisement: ESF Research Networking Programme in 'Thermal adaptation in ectotherms'
The networking programme ‘Thermal adaptation in ectotherms: Linking life history, physiology, behaviour and genetics' is financed by the ESF having as goal the promotion of interchange of ideas and know-how between teams that are working in the topic. The Tropical Biology Association (TBA), headquartered at the University of Cambridge, is an NGO working in partnership mostly with African and Southeast Asian environmental institutions to provide key practical training for conservation biologists in the tropics. Prof. José Alberto Quartau, our representative for about  a decade and a half at the TBA, is leaving this position and presents here a short summary of the highlights of this partnership, namely in the education on tropical ecology of many of our past students. The "VI Encontro Nacional de Biologia Evolutiva" was held on 22 December 2010 at "Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa", FCUL. This meeting was a joint action from Centro de Biologia Ambiental (CBA/UL) and Centro de Biociências (ISPA), and inlcuded a tribute to Prof. Carlos Almaça given by Prof. Luís Vicente (CBA).

June Bioeventos2010

On the 30th  of June 2010, “The Mine of Science – Lousal Ciência Viva Centre”, was inaugurated with the presence of the Minister of Science  and Technology, Prof. José Mariano Gago, as well as the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof. António da Nóvoa. This museum had the active contribution of several CBA researchers that participated on the conception of the scientific contents of several exhibitions (learn more about the exhibit here).

In order to commemorate the Biodiversity day (22nd May), Bioeventos2010 is promoting a new challenge to the publlic. This challenge will engage the public to act as a naturalist would recording the flora and fauna in a specific location using a field guide. The B day field guide was presented to the public on 13th May at Livraria Barata. More details here and here.

The Group Environmental Stress and Functional Ecology took part on the ECOQUARRY project - an experimental project on ecological restoration in calcareous mediterranean areas. The project is reaching its final stage and a guide for Ecological Restoration was published. Read it here.

CBA's Margarida Matos is the Portuguese member at the Steering Committee of the ESF Networking Programme ‘Thermal adaptation in ectotherms: Linking life history, physiology, behaviour and genetics’(ThermAdapt; Oct 2006 – Dec 2011). The programme gives financial support for short visits and exchange grants to promote collaborations between European countries, as well as Science meetings and  training course meetings, in topics related with its main research theme.
