PLANT DIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION

Group description/Main objectives

This research group studies the systematics and phylogeny of cryptogams (bryophytes, lichens, fungi) and vascular plants seeking to renew systematics of these groups, considering their ecological importance and the wealth of reference collections at MNHN-JB. The research is presently being undertaken in the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic Archipelagos: Macaronesia (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands and Cabo Verde), as well as São Tomé e Príncipe Archipelago, in tropical/equatorial Africa, on distinct habitats to address phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships. In this context our main goals are to: (1) strengthen the systematics and phylogeny of cryptogams (bryophytes, lichens, fungi) and vascular plants; (2) develop research on the biodiversity (taxonomy), biogeography and ecology of these groups in distinct habitats; (3) address phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships within bryophyte, lichen and fungi taxa, from Macaronesian Islands and other regions (both Southern and Northern Hemisphere); (4) develop studies on tropical bryology (S. Tomé e Príncipe); (5) increase the knowledge on species diversity, for conservation in situ and ex situ and sustainable use of natural resources, considering the impact of climatic changes; (6) carry on studies on biomonitoring of air and water quality based on bryophytes and lichens; and (7) renew and facilitate the reference collections of MNHN-JB (GBIF-Global Biodiversity Information Facility, making data freely and universally available). The publications of the group are according the main aims presented.
